What is a dead bolt ?

Well dead bolts come is a few different product styles shapes and sizes and is basically a lock that has a single bolt projecting out from the lock body.

Common types of dead bolts;

                                                                                                                                

 

(1) Double cylinder dead bolt                         (2) Cylinder with turn dead bolt                         (3) Timber door                        (4) Aluminium door                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     mortice dead bolt                         mortice dead bolt

Cylindrical dead bolts.

Cylindrical dead bolts (Shown in items 1 & 2) have the keyed cylinder cone proud or sitting on the outside face of the door. These locks can be a double cylinder which has a keyed cylinder on the inside and outside of the door or just a single cylinder on the outside of the door with the inside being a turn snib for escape or easy exit.

Mortice dead bolts.

Mortice dead bolts (Shown in items 3 & 4) are fully morticed in to the edge of the door with only the key hole or keyed cylinder showing. These locks can also be fitted with a double cylinder which has a keyed cylinder on the inside and outside of the door or a single cylinder on the outside of the door with the inside being a turn snib or lever handle for escape or easy exit. Generally the keyhole or keyed cylinders have dress rings or cylinder escutcheons on the face of the door for presentation. These can also be installed in narrow style aluminium framed doors in certain applications.

General rules.

As a general rule, dead bolts should NOT be fitted to fire doors or designated exit doors for egress reasons however they are allowed in some shopfront applications.
